Restoring Trust and Market Leadership: How PGT Rebuilt Its Brand and Its Market Position
A Cross-Functional Repositioning That Drove 28% Revenue Growth and Set Up a Record Acquisition
PGT Custom Windows & Doors, a national leader in impact-resistant windows and doors, was facing stalled growth by 2022. COVID-era operational disruption had damaged dealer trust. National competitors were entering the Florida market aggressively. Brand awareness outside South Florida was limited, and the category itself was commoditizing. Every competitor claimed hurricane protection, and buyers had stopped hearing what made PGT different.
The company needed more than a brand refresh. It needed to redefine what PGT stood for, and rebuild the operational foundation to deliver on that new promise.
The Challenge:
Operational disruption during and after COVID had led to fulfillment delays and eroded dealer confidence
National competitors were expanding into Florida with aggressive pricing and marketing, taking market share
Brand awareness outside South Florida was limited, constraining geographic and channel expansion
The category had commoditized around hurricane protection, making it harder to command premium pricing
Any repositioning had to modernize the brand without alienating the loyal dealer network and Florida customer base that had built PGT over 40 years
Growth Strategy:
I led the strategy that repositioned the brand across 4 connected fronts. Each solved a specific barrier to growth and each depended on the others:
Repositioned the brand around lifestyle value, not just protection, anchored in the new mantra "Freedom to Live Where and How You Want." The reposition opened up new audiences and new geographies that had never considered PGT relevant to their homes
Modernized operational messaging to visibly rebuild dealer confidence, introducing automation and transparency tools like RFID inventory tracking and robotic manufacturing systems that dealers could point to as proof of reliability
Launched a full-funnel go-to-market campaign that aligned brand, sales, and channel — refreshing the logo, digital experience, dealer tools, field sales collateral, and the messaging architecture across every touchpoint
Expanded the flagship product line into new geographies, repositioning it for audiences beyond the coastal impact market and building the demand infrastructure PGT would need to sustain premium growth as national competitors entered the state
The rebrand didn't just reposition the marketing. It rebuilt the commercial foundation the company would be valued on.
The Impact was Immediate and Transformative:
The repositioning didn't just move next quarter's numbers. It rebuilt the value narrative that ultimately defined the company's exit:
28% year-over-year revenue growth following the repositioning
40% increase in sales revenue during the campaign launch period
2x unaided brand awareness, doubling recognition in target markets
37% increase in unit sales across the flagship product line
12% lift in dealer sentiment, driven by renewed confidence in operational reliability
3x increase in consumer engagement across digital channels
The strategic success culminated in MITER Brands' acquisition of PGT Innovations at a 60% premium over the unaffected share price. The rebrand didn't just move product. It moved enterprise value.
